Outbreak of Kennel Cough

We just got back from the vets , Miggy started a bad foghorn sounding cough yesterday afternoon . She is what we call a bucket mouth who eats anything and everything we didn't know if she had something caught in her throat and just couldn’t dislodge it but she was able to eat and drink with no difficulties . Then we thought it maybe she had cut or scratched her throat from eating goodness knows what so we called the emergency vet at our clinic and explained all this , she suggested that we get a pediatric cough suppressant from the drug store and administer it to her  or it could be Kennel cough. Then she said if it doesn't calm down by the next day bring her in. We did that and it seemed to calm the coughing down for the night so she got sleep but early this morning after we gave her some more it didn't help . Miggy was coughing a lot. So we got her into the vet ASAP ! She has Kennel cough, now even though they are vaccinated against it they can still contract it , its like the flu shot for humans you get vaccinated but we can still get the flu !  Kennel cough usually is spread from the groomers, boarding kennels and by other dogs but because of our mild winter the virus is active because cold winters will kill out the virus. and there fore can also be air born  much like the human flu !

She is now on medication for the week . We gave Miggy  her first dose of her meds when we got home. One of the meds helps keep them calm so it doesn't trigger the cough due to excitement and irritate  her throat  and of course the meds for the virus. Miggy is sleeping here after her ordeal with this nasty Kennel cough and the stress !

I think we nipped it in the bud before it had a chance to really  set in !

Until next time have a good day !

Aww, poor girl..
Yes, you are correct, usually we only vaccinate those dogs who frequently are around other dogs, via boarding facilities or groomers, so now it sounds like something to vaccinate against regardless.
Hope she gets better soon !

Poor Miggy, I hope she recovers fast! I didn't know they could get it even tho vacinated. Nice to know that. And if it happens here the dogs will be taken in to the vet promptly. We're getting a new puppy in a couple of weeks. An Austrailian Shephard. Hubby has wanted another farm dog. Years ago had one and they're great with lifestock. Have a great day. Hugs to Miggy!

You've written a good and informative post! I wish more people would realize that the Bordetella is like the flu shot and they can still get it. We had a foster dog that had kennel cough a few years ago, and thankfully our dogs never got it. But it was really bad for him, so I hope Miggy feels better and that the meds work their magic quickly!! We'll send some healing thoughts for her, to help! :-))

Poor sweet Miggy, sorry she is ill, but I know her meds will do wonders. Sugar Plum got kennel cough a few years ago and she was vaccinated too. They told me the same thing, that certain strains are contagious anyway. Her meds helped quickly. A few months ago she was coughing again and I thought she had kennel cough again. That's when we found out she had Valley Fever. Our poor little doggies go through things and it's just so hard on us. Take care, Miggy will be just fine.

I just learner about all of this from my daughter last week. Her dog was at the vet to be spayed and now has kennel cough even though she had been vaccinated... thanks for getting the message out to others and hope your pup is on the mend!
