A Busy Weekend , Hot & Humid

We had our tree done all trimmed up and evened out so no more weight will contribute to her toppling over now . Papa and I spent the weekend cleaning up the majority of it up and colleting good fire wood for next year .  The tree has lost a lot of its shading for us and the birds but it will however still start sprouting new branches and leaves over the next few years as it has been rejuvenated by the trimming  .

It has been hot and humid since Friday here and we have been taking lots of  water  and lemonade breaks in the heat as we have been out in it .  We finally got some well needed rain last night and a thunderstorm . Today is a rest day as our bodies are achy lol !  I have been popping outside today taking a few photos here and there !

The guys that trimmed and cut off the big huge parts that fell off said she looks a bit naked now  yup that she does but all that will fill in with new strong branches .

After a few hundred years I guess the rot just got to it !

But thankfully the rest of the tree is ok !

Mind you the birds seem to act funny when they try to land on what was once there and realizes they cant lol . The Woodpeckers have been feasting on the bugs in the wood  on the ground now that caused the rot . And Miggs has been keeping an eye on them all .

We Can Save Our Big Tree

We were able to get a hold of the company The Tree Huggers that Papa's Dad used a few years ago who work out of town just 20 min from us . The owner and operator Bill came down with in an hour of us calling . He had a look at our old tree and told us it is a  Manitoba Maple  also known as a Box Elder tree and they are a soft wood tree and he is surprised it has lasted all these years especially as we get the southwest winds from our  lake Erie and these trees tend to have branches break easily . He did say how ever the rest of the tree is in good shape and  he will get take care of the over hang of lead branches and the trunks that fell and he will clean and trim her all up for us.  He will be doing this tomorrow Saturday. We said we will do the clean up as we will want it for extra out door fire wood for our outside fire-pit and chiminea but  we wont use it inside for the wood stove as it is a soft wood and doesn't burn well for indoors .  He said he will cut it all up so it is easier to handle  , we could of got him to clean up but we wanted to save a bit cost wise and get wood out of it for ourselves anyways .  Yesterday Papa came home from work at noon and we cleaned off most of the branches from the fallen trunks  on our side ,other then the branches that are holding up the huge trunk from falling more till tree hugger guy gets to it  Saturday .

I have been helping once I put my camera down lol and collecting wood to dry in the wood sheds for my campfire pit and chiminea .

Amongst all this  excitement  lol I have been live trapping and relocating  the family of raccoons one by one who have decided to take residents under my potting shed lol !  Papa takes them to a open field with a forest at the end of it and lets them go and they toddle off as soon as he opens the cage . This is the Mama  I caught one of her babies the other day , now I have the live trap set again for maybe another one ready to be nosy and see what I have for him to snack on .

She was quite behaved as she only growled and hissed at Papa once whilst in transport to her new home ! Had to have Miggs inside whilst this was going on or she would of been all over her and we didn't want to stress her out even more .

Talking about Miggs .. well this is what she has been doing most of the sunny warm days .

JUNE 2016 (49 of 50)

She had just come from the vet  she had injured her front right out side toe I guess it would be like our baby toe but all is good she has meds to take for a week and all will be good again .

So our weekend will be all tree lol !

                                                                                     Until next time !

What's That Saying ?!

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound ?" Well only if your Papa and I in bed at 10:30 pm with the windows open it does .

WOW! last night we both heard a SNAP CRACKLE POP FIZZLE  BANG  BANG !!!!!! and it was loud so loud I though some one was letting of a firework . I took a moment to hear the sound in my head again and recognized it as a tree falling then got up looked out the back  hall window towards the yard and sure enough our south side of our 150 + year old tree had come crashing down . Now there was no wind and no lightning , but id does look like rot got to it and that's why it came crashing down .  I cant believe it after all those decades and she falls apart . We were both very glad it wasn't the side that is over the house but now we have to get a closer look to see if this side is in good shape or not and if not we may have to cut her down and that we both done want to do as we both felt sad that this happened  oh not sad for us but sad for this beautiful old tree as we love it’s beauty and shade it provides in the summers as well as perches for birds who visit our yard , Thankfully there were no nests in that part of the tree this year .

JUNE 2016 (1 of 7)

Must be at least 100foot of tree down on our side and about the same on the cedar hedges and in the field beside us .

I didn't want to get to close to take photos just incase , one never knows if it has finished falling as it is hanging and leaning there for now ! Papa and I have a big clean up of this to do now .

JUNE 2016 (6 of 7)

This is  part of the tree on and in the cedar hedges and over in the field .

JUNE 2016 (7 of 7)

The big empty spot here on the left is where this huge branch was all full  and huge  it covered the entire area when it was there but now nothing empty and bare .

So now onto the clean up and hope the rest of this beautiful old 150+ tree is healthy ! I would hate to loose it !

                                                                                      Until next time .
