I was looking out our computer room window when in the distance I spotted a strange shaped bird with a long neck sitting atop of a tree ! I said to Papa hey look at this bird way over there . I tried to see it with my birding binoculars but he seems to like to hide behind branches . Then he moved closer to our tree just behind Papa’s work shop ! Papa got his camera out and was able to get photos from inside as it is raining out there !
I was able to identify this guy with my book of Ontario birds . A Green Heron ! Now it is very strange to see him in our tree in the yard as the river and woods surround our area . Maybe he wanted to join the party of birds in our yard feasting in the rain !
Green Herons stand motionless at the water’s edge as they hunt for fish and amphibians. They typically stand on vegetation or solid ground and they don’t wade as often as larger herons. In flight these compact herons can look ungainly, often partially uncrooking their necks to give a front-heavy appearance. Green Herons live around wooded ponds, marshes, rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries.
Quite the lovely bird as he sat there checking the area out ! I love the challenge of spotting and identifying birds in hopes they stick around for one of us to get photos of them . Great shots of him Papa even as he kept hiding behind branches and would pop out every now and then !
Another bird species to add to our collection of birds visiting our back yard !
Until next time , hope you have a good day !
Thanks for Popping by !

How wonderful to have a green heron visit your garden. We've seen them but only by the bay.
So happy for you! Awesome shots.
I thought it was a bittern.
