Howling In The Woods

It is another gloomy rainy day today . Papa and I were supposed to go and do a horse photo shoot for one of our Amish clients as he is selling his horses and needs photos of them for the buyer but that isn’t happening today because of the weather we will have to reschedule for another day weather permitting  !

Now the howling in the woods was last night when we let Miggs out to do her business .

I heard a lot of yip, yip howling sounds coming from the woods over by the river . When I lived on the farm as a kid we had Wolves and Coyotes  lurking around  the woods on our farm and in the evenings they would howl and communicate to each other and I would be out there howling with them . We have been here in this  valley  for over 4 years now and this is the first time I have ever heard them  ! It sounded like there were at  least 7 of them .  There is a hybrid that was discovered 12 years ago in Ontario that is a cross between a Wolf and Coyote now known as a Coywolf .

Back in the day I know Wolves were breeding with farm dogs as I once had a cross with wolf and dog many years ago named Bear . The cross breed of dog and Wolf is often the cause of farm dog pups . I have a funny feeling this is what we have lurking in the woods around our valley .

I have always loved both of these wild beauties as individual breeds and love them as a cross to .

This morning as Papa on his computer this morning and saw a quick movement out the window , so he got his camera and tried to capture this fast moving creature !

our fox (1 of 3)

Red fox making a dash from our house across the road , across the neighbours and over to the forest and river .

our fox (2 of 3)

I will name him Rusty lol !

Now  we all know that the Fox doesn’t  howl but they do make a banshee like cry to communicate  !

our fox (3 of 3)

I love the nature we have here howling and all !

Until next time .. have a snap happy day !

i've always heard if you have coyotes, you won't have foxes. we have tons of coyotes here (thankfully no wolves).

When our coyotes run our dogs answer them but do stay in the yard.

As people move into more habitat these animals are learning to live with us.

Great pictures.

Oooh, the photos of the red fox are beautiful!... we used to have those too when we had our little farm and farmhouse we sold in 1998... I miss seeing them... I hope the wolves stay away from Miggy and Harley!... xoxo Julie Marie

Wow!!!!! I find this post so interesting, great pictures.....At the lake I can hear the Coyotes yipping at night, so neat......I have a fondness for wolves, think they are so beautiful and very misunderstood which makes me sad. .....beautiful weather here this weekend, used to snow by now,,,,,..Thanks, Francine.

great capture of the fox ... we had one in the summer that walked down the side of the road just like he was out for his morning stroll

Foxes do make some very strange sounding noises. I had not heard of the coyote/wolf cross before. Very interesting.

Hi, Love your photos. We see evidence of Coyotes near us but have never heard them-of course we live in a development so they probably don't get too close. I love wolves as well but glad we don't see them.
We used to have foxes nearby but the pack got hit by cars. They are so beautiful! Thanks for sharing; have a great weekend.
Hugs, Noreen

No wolves, foxes, or coyotes near us and hope that the ones near you stay safely away from the birds and pets.

Great post! The fox is beautiful. I once spotted one at a cemetery just walking around like it was no big deal for a fox to be there. We have coyotes in the area. People have been warned to keep their cats indoors because they've been disappearing; it's suspected that the coyotes have been grabbing them. Very sad.

Brilliant photos and a very interesting post. When I was on vacation a couple of years back, one of my most memorable moments was to hear wolves howling in the distance. It was early morning and I was sitting on the porch in front of our cabin looking at the Grand Teton as the light was just about to break over the mountains. Magical! And I might have told you this story before but its one that keeps coming back to me every time I hear mention of wolves ;)

I saw the program on Nature of Things where the wolves and coyotes are cross breeding. At least the offspring have the best attributes of both and hopefully excellent survival skills.
When the coyotes get too big in numbers here, the farmers hunt to keep them down.

Interesting we have seen the dog coyote hybrid here often enough , and I suspect a Coywolf is what I met walking down the road to the hay field a few years back, marked very similar to a coyote but TALL and narrow like a wolf. didn't see him long but made me wonder. The problem we have seen with the hybrid is they are often fairly wild but with less inbred fear of humans so very bold and at times aggressive

One of my granddogs is a cross wolf-dog. Most gentle dog I've ever met. But when she barks, oh my we do pay attention, she sounds so fierce. The vet put on her papers mix breed for insurance purposes.

Our coyotes may have moved on, we don't hear them any more, but some one did see a fox about a month ago. I hope we never see Wolves but at night you never know what is in your back yard.
Great post enjoyed it very mush.
