1 in 5 Canadians suffer from one form or another of Mental Health Illness and 1 in 3 seek the help they need . Every day we should talk about it but today is a day where our country gets the word out that there is nothing to be ashamed of and it is part of life and to make the first step to getting help by talking to a friend , family member or better yet your doctor is all in the first step to get that help one needs .
Mental Health Illness is important to me as I myself was diagnosed years ago with depression due to things that were going on in my life of a harsh first marriage of 18 years and with two boys to worry about I could not handle any of it due to being verbally and mentally abused and it all took it’s toll and affected me physically and mentally and I ended up in hospital due to a nervous break down . I got help and it did help a lot . I used to keep a journal of how I was feeling and what went on in my days at the time and I also was taking medication which for me helped a lot . I was doing well for a while there after I got out of the marriage and started a life of my own and met Papa . Then I had a set back when my mum suddenly passed away 5 years ago and I slipped back into depression . I couldn’t go to work for headaches and feeling ill and in physical pain every day . I struggled with it for a long time on top of other things that I was still dealing with from my past that kept creeping up . I recently found out that my oldest son is also dealing with depression and has seen his doctor and is now getting the help he needs and we talk through face book or on the phone and is feeling better . Mental Health Illness will not go away but it can be controlled and treated by the right medications , doctors and talking about it to family, friends and a psychotherapist or other type of doctor who is in the field of Mental Health .
There are a lot of TV and Movie stars that have come to terms and reached out and shared their struggle with their Mental Health Illness and even Olympic athlete's and other athletes have reached out and talked about it , so we are not alone . There are lots of symptoms to look out for when one has Mental Health Illness and to know what they are is important so that we can help or can get the help one needs , could be a friend , family member or co worker .
I have never really spoken about this to all of you as I try to not let it take over my life and make it an issues as I have been feeling better with in my self and am no longer on medication , my medication is my family , friends like you all , my Miggs , my photography and being in a place I love with lots of nature and most of all my Ken AKA Papa , who has helped me in more ways then one by being by my side , understanding and unconditionally loving me for who I am .
So please help those who need help with Mental Health Illness by talking , it is the first step to getting help so they or yourself can feel better and to live life to it’s fullest !

nothing wrong with seeking help. these days, thankfully, medications are available to lift the brain's serotonin levels back to where they need to be. and more intensive treatments available when needed. good for you.
Good for you for facing something that could of very easily destroyed you. Getting help is the first of many steps to over coming mental illness. So good to hear you no longer rely on medication and have control of your life via Papa, family, Miggs, good friends, and hobbies. Hoping things go as well for your oldest son too.
Oh I love that you posted this I have been texting all day that is a wonderful cause. Your honesty is appreciated and I know how mental health issues have a stigma attached to it even in this day but that is changing and thank goodness for that and brave women like yourself. It still carries a stigma. And we think that reaching out and asking for help is a sign of weakness.
Mine is depression, and it's an ongoing thing. It ties into emotional abuse at the hands of my two sisters, a relationship that is now severed for good. I continue to go through therapy, and that has helped. And it's helped me understand them as well, though it doesn't excuse their actions.
Good for you on writing this marvelous post. We fear what we don't understand and communication is so important. So happy you and Papa found each other, and I hope your son will be feeling better soon.
It takes a lot of courage to write about your struggles with mental health. I'm glad you did. Your blog today gives us all hope, and the realization that folks aren't just sweeping mental health issues under the carpet. My son also struggles, and I pray for him daily and encourage him especially during these sunless day of winter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
great post! So glad you made a point of talking about it. I work in mental Health and have supported/watched my sister struggle with bipolar disorder for years, and I wish more folks would in effect join the conversation!
Thank you for your thoughts on this. Nothing wrong with seeking help. I have a dear friend with depression and she knows that she can call me anytime 24/7 if she needs to talk and I truly think these talks help her.She also seeks professional help and has meds to take but I think being a friend to her and listening helps too. I lost a dear brother-in-law to this dreaded disease so know first hand how awful it can be. I have had a few issues with it myself but they were very minute compared to what it could of been. I'm so glad that you are doing better!

A very honest and moving post, Elaine. Thank you for trusting all of us and feeling confident enough to share your struggles and successes...good for you. I know there are so many kinds of abuse, physical, mental and emotional and recognizing that some relationships, including and especially family ones can be toxic is a difficult ting for many folks, including myself.
Elaine, I didn't get to read this until today. But I totally agree with what Grace, [Buttons] has written.
And it does need to be talked about, there has been such stigma attached to mental illness, and depression..I've seen it first hand in family members.
