Harvest Moon/Super Moon

It’s an early Harvest Moon this year for the Northern Hemisphere. Look for the Harvest Moon to shine on the night of September 8-9, 2014.  It’s not just any Harvest Moon , it’s also a supermoon , I did and it was beautiful , all was still  , the sky was clear and the crickets were singing as it echoed through out the valley .

No matter where you are on Earth, a brilliant full-looking moon ascends over your eastern horizon around the time of sunset on September 8. It climbs highest in the sky around the middle of the night, when the sun has finally set and is on the other side of the world  . That’s because the moon lies opposite the sun in our sky at the vicinity of full moon. Being opposite the sun, the moon is showing us its fully lighted hemisphere, or “day” side. That’s what makes the moon look full.

What is a Harvest Moon? In traditional skylore, the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, and depending on the year, the Harvest Moon can come anywhere from two weeks before to two weeks after the autumnal equinox. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, the 2014 ,  autumnal  equinox comes on September 23rd so the September 8-9 full moon counts as the Northern Hemisphere’s Harvest Moon.

What makes this moon a supermoon? This year’s Harvest Moon qualifies as a supermoon because the moon turns full less than one day after reaching lunar perigee – the moon’s closest point to Earth for the month

Interesting eh ? I love the moon .

Until next time my friends, get out there and have a snap happy day !

Beautiful shots of the moon and good explanation of the terms used to describe it!

I saw the harvest moon at 6:30 CT in Texas, and it was just huge and beautiful. I remember the harvest moon as sometimes looking more golden?

Fabulous! You have a great location for seeing the moon and a steady hand for taking its picture. I failed utterly this month.

So glad for your chance to see and photograph this harvest moon, Elaine. We had no view because of 2 solid days of rain on Monday & Tuesday. It was up there, just not visible to us on the VA eastern shore.
