Yesterday we had a new little visitor to our back yard .
An Indigo Bunting . The Indigo Buntings habitat is in weedy and brushy areas, especially where fields meet forests. They love edges, hedgerows, overgrown patches, and brushy roadsides. When not singing from the tallest perches in the area, they can often be seen foraging among seed-laden shrubs and grasses.
Male Indigo Buntings sing from treetops, shrubs, and telephone lines all summer. This species eats insects, seeds, and berries, and can be attracted to backyards with thistle or Nyjer seed. While perching, they often swish their tails from side to side. Fairly solitary during breeding season, Indigo Buntings form large flocks during migration and on their wintering grounds. This little guy is in the breading stage . They are a small, stocky songbird short conical bill brilliant blue overall, but appears grayer in poor light blue wings edged in black .
I like having new visitors to our yard I hope he stays for a while as there is lots of hiding places in the hedges and we have a small forest behind our sheds and a lovely wild field beside us and lots of food here for him .
I think I will call him Blue . Welcome Mr Blue to our Woods Country Cove !

ReplyDeleteI saw my first last spring eating at the feeders, and the misses to. The female is a dull yellow olive color, but still very pretty.

Your Mr. Blue is a wonderful little fellow. We don't have Indigo Buntings here, so it's very interesting to see such a beautiful coloured bird in the wild.
ReplyDeleteHi Elaine... I'm back. Was thinking after I commented that your bird just might be a Blue Grosbeak. Check it out? The wings seem to be more like the Blue Grosbeak colors. Had to tell from the picture.
